What a compliant installation involves
- Survey — chimney condition, hearth, wall construction, distances to combustibles, air supply and the right appliance size for the room.
- Flue — a flexible stainless liner in an existing chimney, or an insulated twin-wall system where there is no chimney.
- Hearth — a constructional or superimposed hearth of the correct size and thickness for the appliance.
- Register plate, air supply and a correctly sited carbon monoxide alarm.
- Commissioning — a smoke draw test, handover, and the HETAS certificate with council notification.
Existing chimney, or no chimney
If you have a sound masonry chimney, the usual approach is a flexible flue liner dropped down the stack and connected to the stove, with the void insulated. Where there is no chimney — a modern house, an extension, an internal wall — we fit an insulated twin-wall flue that runs up internally through the ceilings and roof, or externally up a gable wall.
Ecodesign stoves and Smoke Control Areas
All new stoves sold in the UK now meet Ecodesign efficiency and emissions limits. Much of urban Greater Manchester — including most of Bolton, Bury and Salford — sits within a Smoke Control Area, where you may only burn authorised smokeless fuel or use a DEFRA-exempt appliance. We fit exempt appliances as standard and will tell you whether your postcode is affected; the moorland villages out toward the West Pennines are often outside it. Always confirm the boundary with your council.
Cost and timescale
A stove fitted into a lined existing chimney is usually a one-day job. A twin-wall system, or work involving opening up a fireplace, a new lintel or a built hearth, is typically two to three days. We give a fixed written quote after the survey — no day-rate surprises.
Why the certificate matters
An unregistered installation is a problem when you sell the house: the buyer's solicitor will ask for the Building Regulations compliance certificate, and its absence can hold up or reduce an offer. It also matters for your home insurance. A HETAS certificate is the clean paper trail.

You don't have to, but it is the simplest way to stay legal.
