Opening up, restoring and fitting fireplaces

Opening up a blocked fireplace

Thousands of terraces and semis across Bolton, Bury and Salford had their chimney breasts boarded over in the 1960s and 70s. Behind the plasterboard there is often a usable builder's opening. We open it back up, fit or replace the lintel, form the correct builder's opening for what you want to run — an open fire, a stove or a gas fire — and make good the plaster and hearth.

Hearths

An open fire or solid-fuel appliance needs a hearth of the right material, size and thickness. We lay constructional hearths where required and fit superimposed hearths in slate, stone, granite and tile to suit the surround and the room.

Surrounds

• Cast iron — original and reproduction Victorian and Edwardian surrounds, tiled inserts and combination grates.
• Stone and marble — from bolection mouldings to plain modern lintels and slips.
• Timber — painted and hardwood surrounds, oak beam mantels over a brick or stone opening.
• Reclaimed — sourcing and fitting salvaged pieces to suit a period property.

Adding a stove to a fireplace

A freestanding stove set into an existing fireplace is one of the most popular projects we do. It needs the right hearth, the right clearances to the surround and mantel, and usually a flue liner. We handle the fireplace work and the HETAS registered stove installation as one job.

Check the chimney first

Before any fireplace goes back into use we sweep and smoke-test the chimney. An old flue that has not been used for decades may need lining, and a smoke test tells us whether the draw is sound before you commit to a surround.
